Courses of Study

FIRST YEAR

SECOND YEAR POST-GRADUATE

REGULAR COURSE -- EXPRESSION

FIRST YEAR

      Divided into three terms of ten weeks each.

Voice Culture

     Lectures and individual instruction.
     Physiology and hygiene of the voice.
     Proper breathing -- applied to the speaking voice -- exercises for muscular development -- emission of tone.
 

Phonetics

     Speech formation and enunciation.
     Training of articulatory organs.
     Study of elemental English sounds.
     Ear training -- vocal drills on English consonant and vowel sounds.
 

Flexibility of Voice

      Exercises for the cultivation of mobility of vocal organs -- increased range of voice -- development of slides -- and rate of movement.

     Studies in the criteria of vocal expression -- movement -- pitch -- quality -- vocal energy.

 

Quality of Tone

     Placement -- exercises to develop resonance -- training of ear in discrimination of tone -- tone color and modulation.
    Responsiveness of voice to emotion.
 

Vocal Energy

   Exercises for strengthening the vocal organs and the development of power -- volume and brilliancy of tone.
 

Vocal Expression

   Principles of inflection and their application.
   Grouping of phrases and clauses.
   Intellectual conception -- power to read ideas.
   Studies in pitch -- pausing, modulation, emotion, rhythm, melody, articulation and touch.
   Studies to bring out the following elements of expression:  Grouping, tone-color, central idea, succession of ideas, subordination, values, emotion, atmosphere, contrasts, climaxes.
 

Interpretation and Analysis

   Studies from standard English and American authors.
   Reading with individual criticism.
   Platform reading and recitation.
   Studies of scenes from the drama.
   Impersonation.
   Study of one of Shakespeare's plays.
   Practice weekly recitals.
   Platform deportment.
   Gesture.
