STUDENTS LEARNING BATTERY WORK OF ALL KINDS

Batteries and generators are two related subjects which it is absolutely necessary for you to understand the principles of in order to be a competent man on electric starting and lighting equipment.  It would be worse than a waste of time for you to hunt for a short circuit or ground as the cause of failure for a dynamo to generate, when a proper inspection of its parts reveals the fact that its armature winding has been burned out.  On the other hand, an experienced man would hardly expect a motor to continue starting a gasoline engine when its owner's neglect of the storage battery had permitted it to deteriorate to the point where the battery was practically worthless.  In order to ascertain what is wrong with an electric motor at any time, it is absolutely essential to know what makes an electric motor operate when everything is all right.  I mention this so that you may understand why it is so  important for you to have a practical knowledge of every phase of equipment that enters into the operation and maintenance of electric starting and lighting equipment of all kinds for motor cars.  The picture at the top of this page shows students studying the principles and uses of electric batteries.   In order to understand this work properly you must have the actual practice on the coils and batteries and generators themselves.  It is just as important that you understand coil and battery construction, how to make repairs, recharge batteries, make alterations, rebuild, overhaul, take apart, reassemble them.  When you can do this I will be satisfied that you will be able to locate and repair trouble of any kind in starting the lighting systems.  The picture at the bottom shows one of the largest types of generators in my equipment of the use of students in this department.
A thorough knowledge of batteries and generators is the prime requisite to be an electric starting and lighting expert.  You can see how careful we are to see that you learn every subject expected of a motor mechanic.  We then know you will be competent to hold down a position with the best of them.  My students often say there is as much difference between the equipment and method of teaching here and in other so-called auto schools as there is between a high school and a college.
