Kansas City's Loose Park

LOOSE PARK

Loose Park and June roses,
White ducks and the lake,
Green undulate vistas,
Tree branches that shake;
The circular patterns
Where walks correspond
With hedges as guardsmen,
Blue heavens beyond.
Rare gift of a dreamer
That sprang from the heart,
Enchantment of nature
Embellished with art.
A statue that watches
Of eminent mien,
Extending a welcome
As people convene.

--John Milton Smither.

ROSE GARDEN

(Loose Park)

A habitat of beauty
       Which asks no price or pawn;
Where the ivory petals
       Retain the kiss of dawn.

The glowing flame of morning
       Is captured on its way;
The pink and gold of sunset
       Retouches each bouquet.

Her roses white and yellow,
       And many shades of red,
Proclaim the cause of beauty;
       Each nods a fragrant head,

As rising in their glory
     From out the same dark sod,
Each bears the holy imprint
       That notes the hand of God.

--Hilda Boudinot Moore.
