Robert Lee Gregory was born in Kansas City, Missouri,
March 24, 1863, and has lived his whole life here. His father,
William S. Gregory, came to Kansas City from Kentucky in 1844, and
when the city was organized in 1853, was elected Mayor - the first
Mayor of Kansas City.
The subject of this sketch attended the old
Washington School and then the Central High School, being graduated
from there in 1876. He then went to the Kemper Military School
in Booneville until 1878, when he accepted a position in Texas in the
cattle business, and later embarked in the industry on his own
hook. He returned to Kansas City in 2884, and went into the
employ of the Gregory Grocery Company, founded by his father. He
purchased a fourth interest in 1887 and in 1890 bought controlling
interest.
Mr. Gregory is a Democrat, and was appointed
a member of the Board of Police Commissioners by Governor Stone,
serving until 1902.
He married Miss Nellie Weston November 6,
1885, and they have three children, Katherine, Robert Lee, Jr., and
William Simpson.
